Description |
The Ryan Cabin near the corrals at the junction of Forest Service roads 37 and 600 was a homestead converted to range and recreational use, and is what newspapers referred to as the French family cow camp and hunter headquarters. William P. Ryan obtained patent 227343 on 9-28-1911 so the cabin likely was built in 1906. Ryan sold the land to G. W. Bartell on 1-31-1928 who later sold to the Forest Service. The Robert French family utilized the cabin for family outings and fall cattle round-ups until the 1960s. A foundation depression and logs consistent with a cabin corner are at GPS N48 35 11 W119 52 35 in 2017. The cabin was used as a reference point within Forest Service improvement records during the 1930s. The cabin is named on the 1956 USGS and the 1935, 1937, 1941 and 1960 Forest Service maps. -Okanogan Independent 7-18-1933: "Dr. A. T. Thomas and Mr. and Mrs. Harley Heath spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Robert French at their range camp above Conconully." -Okanogan Independent 10-31-1933: "Dr. T. J. McCain and Lee Johnson are in camp with Robert and Ray French at the French range cabin on Mineral hill for the deer season." -Okanogan Independent 10-30-1934: "Many Hunters:…. Ray and Robert French are hosts for the week at their cattle camp, the Ryan Cabin above Conconully, to a party of friends. In the group are Dr. T. J. McCain, Ross McNett, Chas. Fray and others." -Okanogan Independent 9-1-1936: "Les Meyers, Ray and Bob French were riding for cattle in the Wilder creek basin and stopping at Ryan Cabin over the week-end." -Omak Chronicle 5-17-1938: "State Cattlemen to Meet Here:….The program follows: Monday, May 23, 1938….8:00 a. m. - Cowboy breakfast at Bob French's cabin in Chelan National Forest. Don't miss this feed. Duncan James, one of the best cooks ever with the Forest Service, will see that you are properly fed. On this trip they will pass through the Funkhouser, Tugaw, and French cattle ranches…." -Omak Chronicle 8-27-1957: "Salmon Falls Way Marked For Visitors:…. Note-The main logging road has now been completed clear to Wagon Camp and a junction with the old road we used to take to get to the Les Meyers and Bob French cattle cabins…." (Meyer's cabin was the Goetz and French's cabin was the Ryan). |
