| Description | The Okanogan football team poses for a photo with 14 players and two other people in the background. From the Okanogan Independent newspaper November 20, 1908: "The first game of American football to be played in Okanogan county will occur on Thanksgiving day at 2:30 p.m. The Oroville team sent out a challenge, which was accepted by the Okanogan boys, who at once got busy organizing a team from the material scattered about town, and for the past few days have been practicing and getting in shape. The list from which the Okanogan team will be made up is as follows: Collins, Vansant, A.W. and O.E. Storch, Stark, McKee, Ward, Shaffer, Canova, Swanson, Reed, Schaller, Pine, Brown, Thomson." From an October 1, 1909 article from the same newspaper: "Last year the only game played was against Oroville on Thanksgiving Day, which resulted in a score of 0 to 0 in a wildly exciting contest." At this time the teams were composed of citizens of the area rather than being a high school sport. Negative sleeve: Okanogan Football Team Nov. 26, 1908 |
