Description |
Shows finished Schaller building with signs for Commercial Bank, Schaller Bakery and Schaller's Barber Shop. On back in Frank Matsura's handwriting: "Mr. P. M. Snider, Okanogan, Wash F.S.M. " and a row of Japanese writing. Mr. P. M. Snider is identified at left front as the Manager of Bank. The Schaller building was built by Clem Schaller who was a stone mason and built the bricks as well as the building. Several men are working in the photo with the sign on the adjacent building reading South Half Land Company which became Pratt Forsyth & Lee Real Estate. The plan was for the building to house several independent businesses with the Will Schaller Barber Shop the first to move in during September 1909. By 1911 it contained the Commercial Bank, John Schaller's bakery, Will Schaller's barber shop, Forest Service, Charles A. Johnson's law office, and offices of Dr. Moore, M.D. and Dr. French (dentist). On the third floor were rentals for living quarters, some housekeeping rooms and some singles. It was heated by two large furnaces in the basement and still stands. 5/21/1909 Okanogan Independent announced beginning of construction of Okanogan's first skyscraper which would be the Schaller building. The Commercial Bank was next to move in. Brick facing has just been started. |
